I like to pack away my clothing with a few bay leaves to keep the clothes smelling fresh and keep out insects. Bay leaves or sachets of my lavender potpourri (recipe follows) work well for both summer and winter storage instead of mothballs, and they smell much nicer! I keep a batch of the moist potpourri in the closet where I store winter coats.
4 cups of dried Lavender blossoms
2 cups rose petals
6 crushed bay leaves
1 cup rosemary leaves
6 cups of any dried flower petals you may harvest from your yard or bouquets.
Toss together and set aside. Then, mix together:
2 cups salt
2 cups brown sugar
2 ounces crushed orris root
1 lb gum benzoin.
(Shop at your local craft shop, pharmacy, or natural foods store).
In a tall covered crock, layer first the flower petal mixture, then layer of salt-sugar mixture, and repeat until all is used. Tamp down with a wooden block or spoon after each flower petal layer. Pour cups of Brandy mixed with 2 ounces lavender oil over the top of the mixture. Weigh down a glass plate over the layers with a rock to keep it pressed down. Each day for a month lift off the plate and stir the mixture up from the bottom. Mix well. Weigh it down with the plate every day.
At the end of the month you will have a fermented potpourri the scent of which has been known to last 50 years or more. (I mixed my first batch in 1984. It is still lovely!)
Separate into several covered glass dishes to hold 2 cups or more each and then occasionally remove the covers to scent the room! Tall silo shaped glass or pottery through which the sun does not shine is best. To refresh your potpourri if it should dry out, add a few drops of brandy. Store unused portion in the covered crock.
When washing your sheets and pillow cases, try adding a few drops of essential lavender oil (not fragrance oil) to the wash cycle. The scent of lavender is known to promote sound sleep and sweet dreams!
Just a note to let you know my granddaughter is so pleased with the way your soap has cleared up her skin. Thank you for making such a good product.
